Primary care includes health promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, counseling, patient education, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses in a variety of health care settings. Primary care provides patient advocacy in the health care system to accomplish cost-effective care by coordination of health care services.



Types

Did you know that primary care has four different areas?

  • Family medicine cares for your whole family, from newborns to the elderly, of any age or gender
  • Internal medicine provides primary care to adults
  • Pediatrics provides primary care to infants, children, and adolescents
  • Obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) cares for women’s reproductive health and offers family planning services
  • Cognitive dysfunction—testing & counseling

Physicians who deliver comprehensive primary medical care are uniquely trained in how to:

  • Recognize early symptoms of serious disease
  • Distinguish between self-limited illnesses and problems requiring further medical intervention
  • Perform time-efficient histories, physicals, and diagnoses carried out at the quick pace Required in most ambulatory care settings
  • Provide screening and counseling to prevent disease
  • Communicate with a variety of patients in a long-term relationship
  • Access and utilize social and financial resources for patients
